Shade Net Carports in Cape Town: Installation, Specifications & Options

A shade net carport — known across South Africa as a shadeport — is a galvanised steel frame roofed with tensioned, UV-stabilised knitted netting instead of solid sheeting. Shadeports Cape Town manufactures and installs shade net carports over single, double, triple and multi-bay parking across the metro, at homes, complexes, schools and business premises. The same structure is built in four-post or cantilever form, in 80 or 95 percent shade factors, in stocked colours from green and black to grey, beige and brick.

Shade Net Carport Specifications

Frame

Uprights are 76-millimetre galvanised steel tube set in 400-to-500-millimetre concrete footings, with galvanised cross-members sized to the span. Powder-coating in charcoal, white or green is available over the galvanising. Coastal installations from Bloubergstrand to Fish Hoek always get the coated spec, because raw steel pits within a few seasons of salt exposure.

Netting

The roof is knitted HDPE shade netting, UV-stabilised and warranted by the manufacturer for up to 10 years against UV degradation. Knitted fabric resists tearing and fraying at fixing points far better than woven net, which matters at tension points. Grades of 80 and 95 percent are stocked; 95 percent is the standard for vehicle bays.

Tensioning

Perimeter tension comes from steel cable threaded through the net hem and drawn tight at each corner, with mid-span support on wider structures. Correct tension is what keeps a net silent and still in the south-easter; a slack net flogs, chafes and fails early. Every installation is tensioned to spec and can be re-tensioned in later years as netting relaxes.

Fixing

Poles are set in wet-cast concrete as standard. Core-drilled fixing through existing paving and base-plate mounting onto sound slabs are both available and priced on inspection.

Shade Net Installation, Step by Step

  1. An installer measures the bays, marks pole positions and confirms netting grade and colour at the free quote visit.
  2. Footing holes of 400 to 500 millimetres are dug and the 76-millimetre galvanised uprights are set in concrete.
  3. The footings cure for 24 to 48 hours before any load goes on them.
  4. Cross-members go up, and the carport netting is fitted and drawn tight with perimeter steel cable at every corner.
  5. The finished shadeport is checked for even tension and the site is cleaned before handover.

Replacement carport netting on an existing frame follows the same tensioning steps and is covered under shadeport repairs.

Four-Post or Cantilever

Four-post frames carry the net on a pole at each corner and give the best price per bay. Cantilever frames move all support to the rear so the front edge is post-free — nothing to strike a car door on, and a clean drive-through line for complexes. The rear uprights and footings step up in size to carry the lever, which is where the cantilever premium of roughly 70 to 90 percent goes. Span limits and bracing details are covered under cantilever shadeports.

Bakkies with canopies and small trucks need the height stated at quote stage so entry clearance is built to suit.

Colours and Shade Factors

Stocked netting colours are green, black, grey, beige and brick, with further colours available on order. Darker nets block slightly more UV at the same rated shade factor, which is why black and charcoal dominate vehicle installations. The 95 percent grade is the parking standard; 80 percent suits patios and walkways where light matters. Bays that must also stay dry in winter suit waterproof shadeports, built on the same frame.

Shade Net vs Solid Roofs in Cape Town's Wind

The south-easter is the defining load on any car shelter in this city. A solid sheet roof takes that wind as lift and shakes its fixings loose over time; a knitted net lets the wind bleed through the weave, so the structure carries a fraction of the load. Net also cannot drum or rattle, absorbs hail instead of denting, and keeps bays cooler because rising heat escapes through the fabric. Rain, hail, heat, lifespan and cost all favour netting for vehicle shade in this climate, with solid sheeting winning only where full dryness is essential.

Shade Net Carport Prices

Installed 2026 pricing is R10,500 for a single, R13,500 for a double and R17,500 for a triple, with cantilever and waterproof premiums on top. Size-by-size tables and every cost factor sit in the shadeport prices in Cape Town guide, and re-nets on existing frames are covered under shadeport repairs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a shade net carport the same thing as a shadeport?
Yes. Shadeport is the common South African name for a shade net carport: a steel frame roofed with tensioned knitted shade netting. Suppliers use the two names interchangeably, and the structure, netting and pricing are identical.
How much cooler is a car under shade netting?
A 95 percent net blocks most direct solar radiation, and cabin and panel temperatures under net drop by a large margin compared with open parking — enough that dashboards stop cracking and paint stops chalking. Airflow through the weave also stops the heat build-up a solid roof traps.
Does rain get through shade netting?
Standard knitted netting is permeable, so rain passes through it. Vehicles still avoid most hail damage because the tensioned net absorbs and slows hailstones. A waterproof fabric option keeps bays fully dry for a 15 to 25 percent premium.
Which shade percentage is right for a carport?
Choose 95 percent for vehicle bays; it is the protection standard. An 80 percent knit lets more light through and suits walkways and patios more than parking. Both grades are UV-stabilised HDPE with manufacturer warranties of up to 10 years.
What sizes do shade net carports come in?
A single bay measures about 3 by 6 metres, a double 5.5 to 6 by 6 metres, and a triple 8.5 to 9 by 6 metres, with entry heights of 2.1 to 2.4 metres. Longer commercial runs are built per bay off the same module. Odd yards are measured and made to fit.
How long does installation take?
One day of physical work for singles and doubles, split across two visits: footings first, then netting after 24 to 48 hours of concrete curing. Multi-bay commercial runs take two to three days.
Can an old net be replaced on the same frame?
Yes. A sound galvanised frame accepts a new net at about half the cost of a full new installation, with a fresh UV warranty on the fabric. Frames are checked for base rust and footing movement before re-netting is quoted.
What does a shade net carport cost in Cape Town?
Singles cost R10,500 installed and doubles R13,500 in 2026. Cantilever versions cost roughly 70 to 90 percent more for the heavier steel. The full price list with triple bays and upgrades is on the prices page.
